Cooling Fan for Big Bear
#1
I have a '91 Big Bear 4x4 350 SE. It has an oil cooler on it.
I primarily do slow recreational riding in the woods. I noticed many of the new quads have fans to aid cooling. Has anyone attempted to add a fan to some of the older quads. I use good quality 10W40 oil but thought a fan would help.
Information on how and how much would be appreciated.
Also, has anyone tried those oil additives (Slick50, DuraLube, etc..) to reduce friction?

Hello
Thought this might help.
I Have a 1999 Kodiak, It has a oil cooler with a back-up fan. So far it a has never come on. I have used my quad extensively this summer working if very hard even on the hottest of days. It still has never overheated to the point of needing the fan to come on.

I have a 93 Kodiac 400. My bike does have the fan to go with the oil cooler. A few weekend ago we did some serious mudding. We worked our bikes hard and had one of us overheat. I had to back track through the mud and ruts to get my friend. Even after going through the mud twice my oil cooling fan did not even start. At first I thought that the fan must be broken so I had it tested and its ok. So I'm pretty sure that your bike will be ok with out one. So install one if you want (its your bike) but I have yet to see mine come on.

How much would it cost to buy all the parts, including with which to mount it, and time involved. Is it worth it? Has your 91 Big Bear ever shut down from being overheated? If you keep good oil in the case and change it regularly according to how your BB is used, I don't think you will have any problems, especially if you have had your BB for almost 10 years - just my $00.02 worth.
I see you live in Canada. I live in central Florida and I've had my 00' BB 4x4 for about 14 months now. During spring and summer the oil cooling fan comes on a lot. I always use Spectro 20-50 motorcycle oil that gets changed about every 10 hours. Last weekend during a moderate 1 hour ride in 40+ degree weather, the fan came on for the first time all weekend...just as we got back to camp before I turned the machine off.
I suppose the oil cooler fan has its purpose depending on riding conditions.
