the bare metal stuff. I want to get more real travel for desert racing, i would love to get 20" of travel and still keep it under 50" wide. It does not seem possible with traditional doubble wishbone set up so I am looking into options, and just wanted some more input or ideas.

That setup, both front and rear is real tricky. If you plan to race you need to be sure that such modifications, or anything differing from a stock configuration is allowed. That setup would not pass in a production scenario where a gusseted frame shee with arms would.
Dean was being innovative for sure. I did see it race and the rear shock went up like a pogo stick after 30 miles. He still races it in SCORE races though.
There has also been a 250 that had a rising rate, pushrod/bellcrank a-arm setup too. It allowed the shocks to be mounted between the frame rails and use of shorter shocks.
Also, do a search for the W-Tec Eraser quad...totally different ,leading arm design completely without a-arms. I have questions about druability, but again, original.
Truth be told, with a little work you can get a solid 16" of travel in the front. I've seen 21" cycled through on a rear suspension setup. Problem you run into is you may end up with too much ride height, even with the best sag control type shocks, and some travel may be useless because you would end up hitting the frame.
Take you time and good luck.
