Winches & Water???

Kodiac I had a 92 big bear that I just recently sold, and I had a warn 2000 that I bought with the machine new. I had run mud and water and the only problem I had was that the protective boot on the bottom wire connection at the winch (can't remember if positive or negative)held water in it and caused corrosion to the terminals. I learned this when my winch quit working. The boot is like a cup ( it holds water and mud) and I recomend either coating with a grease that is electrical friendly on the terminal or making a small hole in the bottom of the boot ( or both) so water will not be held. I also recomend An occasional cleaning of the terminal just to be safe. Hope this helps.

I have a 1999 Kodiak with a dealer installed Warn Winch. I have done many deep water crossings were the winch was totally under water for long periods of time. I use the winch all the time, still haven't had a problem with it. Never even concidered it to be a problem untill I read your posting.

I have a Warn 2000 on my wife's Trailboss, and it's been so covered in mud and grime, that I've had to get after it pretty hard with the pressure washer, and I have yet to have a problem with it.
I think the "warning" is simply a way to get out of replacing one under warranty if it was on a Quad that fell throught the ice and stayed water logged for more than a few hours.
