Default Twist Throttle on 660 Raptor...

Looking to install a twist throttle on my 03 660. Has anyone here done this & what are your thoughts on if it works out better then the thumb throttle. I know Motion-Pro makes a kit but was reading through ATVrider Mag and saw that a company called Terrycable makes a kit that can be switched from thumb to twist with the flick of a switch. Anyone heard of this?

Yeah, I never liked twist throttles on a quad and have never talked to anyone that did like them. Twist throttles are for motorcycles because on a motorcycle you dont have to turn the handlebars as much, you just lean to turn.

My father put a twist on his KFX700..... after two mishaps, one in which he cracked the tube of the twist throttle with his thigh (a nice baseball size lump was left behind) the thumb was back on .....

On a two-stroke where you are always either full on/off throttle it might be OK but with the torque or a 4-stroke where you need to be fine with the gas at times it seems to be a disaster waiting to happen for most people......

A bike is a different animal, and you know when even 99% of the Pro ATVMX racers are using thumb throttles that the twist is probably not the best way to go.

Maybe in the dunes where you are always wide open or something, but in the woods it is not so good........

I have a twist on my Raptor. As long as you have experience with them, you should be fine. I used to ride dirt bikes before switching to ATVs. One advantage is having a full grasp on the grip instead of just four fingers. The negative, sometimes certain turns can be awkward. I've had experience with both types of throttles. That being said, I have no preference one way or the other. My next quad will probably stay a thumb throttle.

Love them for dune cruising and trail riding, switch back to my thumb throttle for any type of racing. Probably just because I'm used to racing with the thumbs. Bikes handle so much differently when racing, I wasn't able to transfer my bike experience over to the track with a twist on the quad.

The big factor not mentioned previously is that a thumb is totally sealed where as a twist is open to mud, dirt, and water. A twist will also jam up on the bar end at every crash or roll over. I run a twist on my dune only Banshee and love it. I will keep thumb on trail rides like 400EX and Griz. Me and kids jump back and forth between our favorite twist and thumb with no problem. I don't see much logic being made in claim that a quad steers differently than a motorcycle and therefore needs a thumb.

It's not really that they turn different, it's that your body is in different positions. On a bike you are pretty much in line with it the whole time since the bike leans with you. On a quad you are moving your whole body all over the place, this makes a twist throttle feel a little different.

You sure do turn differently. On a bike you're making the turn with your whole body as you lean with minimal input to the handlebars. On an atv you are turning the handlebars and leaning while the quad stays upright, meaing that you're no longer supported by the atv but rather fighting against it. Makes a HUGE difference in flattrack but also prevailent in other terrains and ride types.
