big bear or eiger

The Eiger hands down. The 400 big Bear is a pure utility machine greared to work. It will do 45 mph and not sound happy doing it for long. The Eiger will do 50 mph smoothly all day long.

These are the wrong machines if you're worried about how quick it is. But the Eiger 400 5 speed will top out right at 60 stock and will be alright doing that all day long. The automatic version is sorta junk in my opinion, and the performance really stinks because of it.
But I really would love to have one of the new big bears. I can't attest for the top speed or performance of the bear because I don't have much experience with them, but looking at the numbers, i think it would be a damn nice machine to have for the price. And knowing that they are still based off the old reliable yfm engine that yamaha has been using since the 80's, it'll probably be a bulletproof reliable, versatile, and snappy machine.

I just remembered that this month's QUAD Magazine has a good shootout between a bunch of the 400 class 4x4's. So before you make any choices, i'd highly recommend that you pick that up and read what it has to say. The big bear isn't in the shootout, but the grizzly 400 is, which is basically the automatic version of the big bear.

One thing to keep in mind here though is that the big bear has a big market with mud riders. With the gearing being so low from the factory, and all the torque the yfm engine has, that thing will be able to pull some real tall tires and then the gearing won't be so ridiculously low. My buddy has an eiger with 28's and with the tall gearing it's such a dog now. Just something to keep in mind.

Defiantly a 400 BB is much better for doing certain things, and mudding with larger tires is one of them, also towing (Less down shifts needed going up long hills).
