Default Raptor 660r Valve Timing??

Hi, i am working on a 2001 yamaha Raptor 660r for a friend. We are thinking that the valve timing may be off by a little bit and were wondering how you can check this and correct it. It runs good but is kind of hard starting. It is hard to turn over. I have heard about "compression releases" on these things but do not know much about them. It is making a little noise in the engine that sounds like timing so thats where we decided to start unless anyone here has a different idea. Thanks

Danny

The manual states 10-15mm in the intake and 15-20 on the exhaust. If the atv is not maintained regularly is would go on the high side since the specs tighten up with engine use. Being an 01, the timing chain may be stretched to the point of timing being off and in need of replacement. Has the battery been checked? A manual is available online in many places.....it's about 10 megs zipped. EDIT...oh yea.....welcome to the connection forums.

Default Raptor 660r Valve Timing??

Ok...update on this raptor. We are thinkin that our valve timing is advanced. Not sure how much but we have had a few people tell us the same thing. I need to know how I can find out where the valve timing is at and if it is not right how i can correct this. Since this is not my quad i do not really want to buy a manual on it so any help on here i will take and appreciate a ton. Thanks again

Danny

You have to pull the valve cover to check the cam timing. It is unlikely that it would be off unless someone put it together wrong. The chains can stretch, but the automatic tensioner keeps it tight. If it stretches, the timing will retard.

Default Raptor 660r Valve Timing??

Not to interup the person who is being helped with his problem on his raptor but I am asking for some help on my raptor. I took all the plastics off my raptor and I cleaned it with a power washer I made sure that I closed up anything that I clould get water in.

But anyway I have two problems when I try to start my quad all the lights and thing will come on telling me that my wires are not damped but when I press the start button it wont do anything I wiggled the starting coil and and started to try to kick over but I think that the vales are closed cause when it was trying to start I did'nt hear any type of momentom I had this problem before and I think my vales may be closed from the cold weather.

Also I need some tips on how to get a dura blue axle off I was reading my clymer magizine and I thought I had an idea of
what was doing so I took out the alan screw as I was told from the magazine and I started to turn the nut away from the from the back disc braked and at the end it wont even move the reson why I am taking the axle off is because I need to try to drill and tapp my spoket hub or replace it because I tryed to go the cheap way and put bolts in the hub from home depot and after a while the torque from the engine snapped them and I have metal stuck in the sproket hub so I am really asking for help anyone please help me.

Well, when i crank it over the valves open late. The battery has a full charge, the starter is good, all my connections are also fine.
