first atv..07 Wolverine 450...help with mods
#1
I just got my 2007 Wolverine 450 4x4 today and just had a few questions on modding it and breaking it in...
I was looking for recommendations on breaking it in and when i should take it in for the breakin service..also was wondering how long until i need to do the first oil change?
Also wondering when it is safe to start modding it and what mods do i need to gain more on takeoff AND topspeed...from what i have read...alot of people say to get the EPI clutch kit, K&N filter, jet the carb, and performance exhaust....it would be really helpful if anyone could tell the best place to get these mods and exactly what to get....maybe how much money im looking at...really just about any info will help cause i am new to atv's and i know nothing...thanks alot guys!!

Hey, I know what you're going through. When I first bought my Wolvey I had the same problem. The only advantage I had over you was that it was my second fourwheeler, not my first. First thing's first, when you break it in, break it in like you would ride normally, DON'T do what it tells you to in the manual. This is for 2 reasons, it works better and is much more fun. As for your first service, do it at about 200 miles. It doesn't need to be exactly, but get it somewhat close. Also, do the service yourself. All you really need to do is change the oil and check a couple other things. Don't worry about checking valve clearance or anything. I never checked it on my old machine and it ran great. I wouldn't start modding until your warranty is up because most of the mods will void your warranty. If it doesn't matter to you, I'd wait until around 300 miles so that your engine is running how it will be for the rest of it's life, and you won't have to change jetting or anything once you get it set up. For mods I would go with either the GYT-R or HMF exhaust, a jet kit, and a new filter. (I like the twin air foam filter. Not as much flow but it filters WAY better than a K&N and costs less.) I wouldn't go with the EPI clutch kit if you want more top end because that will add more low end but take away speed. There aren't many mods that will add top speed, and the limiter will only let it go to 50 to 55ish anyways. I would suggest the BMP CDI once it comes out, which will let your engine rev higher and make it go faster. For places to buy, I would get the HMF exhaust on ebay, the GYT-R exhaust at powerpartsplus.com the jet kit at denniskirk.com, and the air filter at denniskirk.com. The BMP CDI isn't out yet so I don't know where you will be able to get one. For cost I would say, HMF Exhaust = 230, GYT-R Exhaust = 350, Twin Air filter = 25, K&N filter = 50, and Jet Kit = 60. Those are just close estimates, I don't know exactly how much they will cost. You should be able to do all of those mods yourself except maybe a clutch kit. Don't take it to a dealer unless you have to and do all the services yourself. I would buy all your oil and stuff at either parkeryamaha.com or powerpartsplus.com. For engine oil it takes Yamalube 4 10W30 or a different company's 10W30, for differential gear oil it takes Yamaha Shaft Drive Gear Oil, for an oil filter it takes a Yamaha oil filter #5GH134400000, and for a spark plug it takes an NGK DR8EA. Make sure you buy some Yamaha anti-freeze, and Yamaha DOT 4 brake fluid as well. Buy all of this stuff first, then buy skid plates, unless you almost only ride dunes (either GYT-R ones or Ricochet ones), and THEN buy performance upgrades. Trust me it is much better to have a fourwheeler that doesn't have a busted engine than a fast one. When I bought my Wolvey I only thought about buying performance upgrades and then I finally realized I needed to buy everything else first. This is all the info that took me 4 hours to find and I know how great it would have been to have someone tell all of this stuff to me. Hope this helps, and welcome to the forums and the world of fourwheeling!

Yhea I definetly agree with what 07 wolvy450 said.
When the GYTR exhaust becomes available again(on backorder until April 15th) it runs 297.00 to your door from powerpartsplus.com
I just got all of my skids installed about 2 weeks ago and havent gotten out to do much riding since then, but I really hope to soon.

Oh yhea one more thing, definetly buy the GYTR radiator guard, if you use it just once it will more than pay for itself, I apply the same thing to my trucks and atvs, plan ahead and protect radiators from sticks(or deer on trucks).

i don't really know how it works either as i am not the mechanic, but i think that yamaha just sets it from the factory so it performs the best in all conditions with the original jetting and parts. I think that after you get a filter and pipe and what not the bmp cdi will boost it up so it will rev high enough to get good performance. again, i'm not really sure how it works so maybe ask ctateusa or u1arunit.

oh yeah i forgot to say this in my first post. it looks like you really researched your stuff and asked the questions that weren't really answered. most guys just take the easy way and post all the questions you could easily find answers to. and i think we all feel kinda mean when we say to someone "type it in google and you'll find an answer". just my oppinion but i'm sure other guys agree. kudos to you

crap. sorry for the third post . i just re read your question and i think you're talking about the throttle limit screw... i got it. the only thing that does is it prevents it from going too fast if you are a young or inexperienced rider (don't worry about it). you just want it adjusted so it will let you throttle all the way up. the best way to do this is to loosen it alot and hold the throttle all the way in (with the engine off of course). slowly turn the screw in until it pushes the throttle back out a little. adjust it so it lets the throttle go all the way in and ur set. sorry for the mix up, i had a long day at school.
