Default EXHAUST ON FIRE!!

We measured the headpipe on a Yamaha 450 one time with a lazer thermometer and it was about 550 degrees F. If your pipe glows alot, your engine is running too lean. In my experiences, the pipe will glow a little right at the head if you're running it hard on a cool night even if the jetting is about right.

Bink, The answer is yes. The head pipe can get hot enough to notice a glow. Especially at night and more so with an aftermarket exhaust as they use thinner material.

If its really getting super hot where the glow is REALLY excessive then it COULD be due to a lean condition. This is an old 2 stroke rule of thumb.

With the new 4 strokes and their newer ignitions, its now also possible that excessive head pipe glow can also be due to a RICH fuel condition where your dumping so much fuel in that its still burning as its exiting out the exhaust valves causing the head pipe to glow.

So , all by itself, a glowing head pipe tells you nothing. You have to put it together with other symptoms to figure out if you have a real problem.
