Default procedure for checking to see if battery is charging?

Does anyone know how I can check to see if my charging system is working properly on a 99 warrior?

Can I start it and pull the ground from the battery to check it that way or was that only for old VW bugs with a generator?

Hook up a voltmeter, accross the battery. With the key off, it should read battery voltage. somewhere around 12.4 volts. Now start the motor, voltmeter is still hooked up, and now read the volts. At idle it should be that 12.4 or better. Now slowly increase the revs, and the voltage should increase with the revs, to about 15 volts max, at about 5000 rpms.
