Default YFM250 crankshaft?

Okay I have a 1990 YFM 250A and was told by a mechanic that the crankshaft needs replacing. He quoted me $1600 to fix....this ATV is not worth that much!!! So is there a cheaper way to fix or should I just sell it for parts?? I have seen used crankshafts for $75 on ebay, but have been warned that they would not work or would be a problem soon again. Please any advice is appreciated! I wanted to keep this ATV as a second one for friends to ride as we have bought a newer Honda 300.

If you could pull the engine out yourself and re-install it, that would save you some $$. I just had a crank put in mine. The crank and top end parts were around $700. I pulled the engine out and took it to my local ATV shop and they only charged me $140 to replace the crank.

Do you think it would be a mistake to buy a used crankshaft off of ebay???

as long as your bearings are good you should be ok. just dont buy a crank with significant wear!

Anytime you buy anything off Ebay you're taking a risk. I wouldnt buy something like a used crank, because if you have to spend the money to tear the engine apart, you might as well get it right so you dont have to do it again for a while.
