Default Really slow 04 Kodiak 450

My 04 Kodiak 450 is dead slow, top speed is 38 mph, with 41 being the fastest I've seen (downhill), why is it so slow? I ride with other Kodiaks and they run in the 50 mph range. My wife's Recon will outrun it. I have 26" Goodyear mudrunners on ITP C series for trails & I run 25 inch paddle tires in the sand, and its the same speed even though I lose 50 lbs of weight going to the 25's. its bone stock other than a k&n filter, I've looked it over but I don't see anything obvious that would slow it down, throttle travel, carb adjustments etc. it runs great and has plenty of low end power, its just dead slow! thanks for any help.

Is it an automatic? If so I would check the primary clutch grease and see if there is any slung out or see if there is any water in the clutch housing

miassmaro,

You need to pull the right side floorboard off, remove the black clutch cover, clean any residue or grease that has been slung out of the primary clutch off of the belt or any other clutch parts. Next you need to spray everything down with PJ1 cleaner to remove any residue on the belt and pulleys. Repack the primary clutch with grizz grease from yamaha(17.00 a can). reinstall the primary clutch onto the machine and reinstall cover and floor board.

marine grease will work just as well as grizz grease. check your belt width aswell.

another thing; are you hitting full rpm? maybe a plugged main jet on carb?

Well I pulled the cover off, but with the lack of a clutch tool or a big enough strap wrench I didn't get the whole clutch off but I did take off the outter shield on the clutch and its still packed full of grease, there was no grease slung out inside the belt case, it was really very clean in there and the drive belt looked great. the motor runs strong, no bogging or missing its just slow.
