Go with web cams they are much better than hot cams. You do not need to do anything with the head, but you should have it ported to see the real potential. If you get a cam you need to get better valves, rockers, springs.
I wouldnt be so sure of that 'no replacement for displacement' thing with the 450's they are very quick from turn to turn. You will beat them in a drag but they will be in front untill 5th gear. And if you really want to test that theory Ill race that rappy anywhere with my 250r Come on i'm giving up 410cc's on ya

did you ever think of the mods they might have with a cam shaft in a yfz450 that helps like wonders i haven't really done much with a raptor . that would be an interesting race between you 2 record it and put it on you tube or sumthin. good luck racing

Hot cams are for wimps. Get a real cam and go with a Webcam. Like Fulltiltrider said, you need valve springs, and you dont have to do any head work. Not sure what he meant about you "need" larger valves and rockers. You can run your stock valves and rockers, but for a few more bucks you can get larger valves if you "want" to. I would recommend it if you have the $$$$, and a port/polish would help a lot, too, but that may run $200-400.

When I did my first engine mod I sent my top end out to Trinity for a Pro-Port and a 686 bore, 11:1 JE Piston and a mid range WEB cam. It was a big improvement over stock.
I also got a BIG improvement when I pulled the WEB cam out and went to a Stage 2 Hot Cam. WEB Cam has a more aggressive cam that my be compairable to the Stage 2.....but I can't speak for that one.
I would however not hesitate to tell someone that they will be happy with the Stage 2 Hot Cam.
you will need stiffer springs, your stock valves will be fine if they are in good condition. Nothing wrong with going lighter if your wallet will support that decision.
Be cautious about being too cocky around the 450 guys.....I have ran across some extremly fast ones. A Cam, pipe and jetting seriously wake those machines up!! Not to mention they are 50 pounds lighter.
Brag AFTER the race is done.....

Web cams don't come in "stages", they come in different "grinds".
With your bone stock 03 I'm sure you're a better resource than Greg and others who've actually removed a stock cam and tried something else.
Stage 2 hotcams are the best choice for a recreational bike IMO. We'll ignore for a moment the problems web cams has had with the ears of their cams breaking off and causing all kinds of damage and just say that they don't offer as good of an all around package as the stage 2 hotcam, you're always sacrificing more than you're getting in return. If you're really looking for peak power you're barking up the wrong tree altogether, look at megacycle's lineup.

Man didnt need to be ripped here. Hey man I would post durations but 95% of most people wouldnt understand that. Saying 'stage two' is just a classification that everyone understands. My rappy may be stock but I have built 3 400ex's that would smoke a piped rappy, 1 with hot cams and two with web cams. Yes the 'stage two hot cam makes more peak but a web has a much better power range. Ive never heard of any problems with web cams. I do all of my motor work and have never seen any problems either. My rappy is stock because I know there is no way I can build half the atv out of that rappy as my 250r, which I also built. The raptor is a good trail quad thats it.
