vin help!
hey all...here's the story, i've been waiting on the title for my 2001 raptor that i bought a little over a month ago. the day i bought it i went with the guy to a little shack in the middle of nowhere to get a notary to sign it over and i signed all the paper work and she gave me the pink sheet portion of the title and said i would recieve the title in the mail within a month and that was june 12, it's now july 18 and no title. i checked the vin# on the pink sheet and it matches the vin# on the frame. Here's the thing, i was only $20 short because of the title charge and the guy spotted it to me, but the guy made it clear that he wanted the $20 mailed to him (this also after i had just handed the guy $2300 cash!). Well first off, the guy had told me that it needed nothing, but after a week of having i put atleast $300 into for replacement of the rear bearings and the carbs to be cleaned, and it also needed new swingarm bearings but i couldnt afford that. So, needless to say i was a little pissed so i never mailed the guy his $20. So now I'm thinking its possible he told the notary not to mail the title out until he got his $20. I now unfortunatley have to sell it already due to school costs but no one wants a quad without a title (which is understandable). Is there any sort of website i can go and check the vin# number and make it's not stolen or something??

Er... I would call the Registry or the Notary.. but in all honesty if this was Massachusetts and they SAY a month.. you'd be lucky to see it in two...
I doubt you still owning him $20 is the reason for the delay.. you also have to Remember that the 4th of July is a holiday etc..

update: hey guys...unfortunately it turns out the quad was in fact, stolen. What happened was, my buddy and i took it up to a local dealer and he ran the vin and it came up stolen. First thing i did was talk to my neighbor who happens to be an officer and he told me to contact the authorities for the township that i bought it in immediately. Luckily the officer that i talked to told me that i shouldn't be in any trouble, but this all just happened within the last few hours so i'm hoping we'll find that a$$hole and hope he gets fried . Now the only problem is whether or not i'll get my money back : ( .

wow,, that sucks,, but that should be a lesson to everyone.. check BEFORE you buy!
Also, when you get something notarized you are supposed to show ID and that ID is supposed to match all the info that goes into the notaries log, AND you supposedly have his mailing address.
Hopefully the cops can get his ID from that and arrest him.
Unfortunately you can't get blood from a turnip so if he has no money he wont be able to pay you back unless the judge makes restitution part of his sentence AND puts a time limit on the payment, like he must have you paid back in 6 months so he wont try to pay you back @ 3.00 a month.
