The 00 Kodiak has a plug where the speedometer is suppose to hook to that will come out. Mine did and when this happens the engine oil will run out just like the drain plug was removed. We were fortunate enough to notice it and shut it down before any damage I hope. This in my opinion is a stupid stupid design, and Yamaha should immediatly issue a recall, and fix it. In my case the plug was just pressed in, and sagebrush or something popped it out, and may of cost me an engine, through no fault of mine. The plug is located on the lower left side of the motor. The best way to see it is get on your belly and look for it. The fix is to use the holes available and affix a seal that cannot come out. In my case the holes weren't visable till the plug came out. The machine is currently at the shop being repaired so this won't happen again, the event is documented so if there are problems I can seek a solution. It is recommended that others check their machines for this.

The machine was taken to a Yamaha dealer, and the fix will be with a plug that will be mounted using the cap screw holes, and then there will be no possibility of a problem. This is a 00 problem, but I guess according to the mechanic, not all as some have the plug already bolted in. It is good to hear about the repair made under warrenty, but mine has had tons of use. Th 01's have the speedo, so no problem unless it comes loose I would say.

The tap screw holes are hidden by the plug and are visable only with the plug removed, or when it falls out. The speedo drive which is a right angle dirve, fits in the hole when the plug is removed, then held with the screws. The mechanic said that speedos can be installed in 00 machines for I think he said $130. I choose not to have one installed now, wanted to see if the engine has suffered first. It must be said that this incident has not soured me on the machine. It is just the Spam wordSpam word Spam wordSpam word Spam wordSpam word Spam wordSpam word ling little lack of attention to detail by Yamaha that one has come to expect. Kinda like the air box problem on the Banshees, or the rear brakes on this machine that I've read time and time again on the Forum. Just a Yamaha thing I guess, love it or leave it. The Kodiak is a outstanding investment though.
