Belt slip prevention
With all the talk about belt slipping with the Ultramatic I would like to provide a little help.
The Yamaha drive case is fully sealed except for the drain plug which is rubber sealed.
Water will enter the air intake at the front or at the discharge at the rear (although less likely due to the air moving out).
Even if you don't deep water ride your machine you can still get water into it when you drive into a stream, etc., full on and the water comes over the front.
If anyone is interested I will give you the specs and photos of the intake snorkel I put on my '07 Kodiak. It was very inexpensive. The largest expense was the new front panel I purchased since a hole has to be drilled in it and I wanted to keep a panel in pristene condition in case I had changed my mind. Now I know that I will not be changing my mind anytime soon. But even this panel only set me back $35.
The whole snorkel can be made for around $15 and takes about 30 minutes. It definitely does what it's supposed to.
If you really want to get fancy, I'm thinking of designing a discharge snorkel for the rear that will still look good.

A female adapter is cemented to the factory intake duct and a male adapter is t-taped (to keep it water tight) and threaded into it. This allows replacement without disturbing the cemented connection. It also allows adjustment if desired.
