03 Raptor with knobbies faster than YFZ450 with paddles?

Im not a kid who starts trouble or wants heated debates or any crap like that, im an old timer here on the forum who checks in every now and then. (check my member number and join date!)
Recently sold my loved Banshee and got a healthy 03 Raptor.
(piped, jetted, runs like a beast)
At Ocotillo wells, up blowsands, a shiny new(er) YFZ450 with paddles and razors was obviously there just to hillshoot, as Ocotillo is mostly dirt, with a little sand..)
Anyways, he kept instigating a race.
My rap had its old knobbies on, with hardly any pressure in them. (3-4 PSI)
With a rolling start, he might get a jump out due to added traction, but the rap would always pull past him slowely 3/4 up the hill.
Guy looked about my size. (190)
Had my rap been equipt with its paddles, I would have clearly pulled him pretty hard I think.
Is this... normal? Just big CC torque or what?
My bud recently picked a LE 04 black raptor, and despite my being 30 lbs heavier than him, I pull him on top end as well. (5th gear, wide open, I pull ahead)
Is my rap extra happy or what?
Any insight is cool.. NO FLAMES, no smartass comments please.
Im diggin my raptor. Its a fun machine.

One common problem with sand tires is people buy too much paddle. (too many, too tall and/or too large a tire)
The result is the quad's gearing cannot pull those tires well in top gear and the bike wont accelerate in top gear.
Or, flip the issue, gear down to pull those tires, and now the quad tops out at a slower speed.
It's a balancing act.

do you have a different sproket size than stock?that might account for better top speed. and i dont think it is very normal unless you have alot more mods than the yfz, i think you are just a better rider than the guy on the yfz450
btw how hot was it? looking to make a trip soon.

Just recently put on a factory stock replacement. I am a good rider... but he seemed to know the bike as well.
Anyhow, at night it was about 85, very nice, 9am, 92 or so with a nice breeze, and probably was around 100 when we left around noon.
Great night and morning riding. A little hot during the mid-day. (not for long!)
