Hop up Wolvy, or bigger quad?
#1
After 12 years of faithful service, lots of hard miles, and a new top end ( twice, ran her too hot once, scored the cylinder), I am trying to decide on one of two options, one, pull the slightly wounded motor from the Wolverine, ( starting to make some noises in the bottom end), send it to four stroke tech for a 446 kit, or clean it up, and trade to a new quad, like a Grizz, or something similar. I don't want a race type engine, needing race fuel, just looking for a bit more power, so any of you big bore stroker Wolverine owners please let me know how yours work, and what it cost to do. I still want to be able to do yard work and pull a mower, so I don't want a high rpm racer mod, just lots of grunt and good top end to boot, I still want to be able to do fast trail rides like I do now. Any one who has traded their Wolverine in on another quad, please let me know what you got, how you liked it, and if you lost any sleep over the loss of your old friend. I want to weigh both options with as much information as possible before deciding what to do. Thanks for any help and advice you can give.

If you are not brand loyal, and decide to trade, take a good look at the 5 speed Suzuki Vinson. As you can see in my sig. I have both the Wolvy and the Vinson.
The Vinson is everything I always wished my Wolvy was.
It has more power overall, especially low end torque where there is a world of difference.
Factory selectable 2wd/4wd. Much better mud protection. A low range tranny, and a SRA makes it a good workhorse. Top speed in the 62-63 mph range.
But the best surprise is how nimble it feels for a 600 lb quad. I'm sure if you started jumping it the weight would be obvious, but just for fast trail riding it is very agile.
The downsides to it are,
Factory tires give it a mushy feel. I replaced them with 26" Bearclaws.
And it is choked down from the factory. I replaced the the pipe with a slip on HMF and changed to a Diamond G snorkel with a rejet and it made it a totally different animal.
The rear shocks leave a lot to be desired but I can live with that.
Other than things listed it had been a rock solid, ready to work or play quad. Everyone of my friends that I have let ride it came back impressed.
I have kept my Wolvy because my G/F likes to ride it.
It is a good machine, with a pipe, filter, rejet, and a 424, but after riding my Vinson I can get on it and it feels like a wimpy childs quad.

Funny you should mention the Vinson, OhHell, a guy at work is selling a 5 speed one, can't remember if it is an 03 or 04, maybe even newer, but he was only asking 3300, and it was low miles, just a few trail rides, and a couple trips to the woods deer hunting, and yard work. As far as brand, I'll ride whatever quad fits my needs and makes me happy, I was looking at Yamaha, Can Am, Suzuki,Kawasaki, the Cats are nice, but seem big and tippy for what I want, and nothing personal to Polaris riders, but I'm not real confident with the 4wd system, with the Awd system and lack of engine braking on most models. Love their sleds, I have 2 !!!I know Honda is a solid quad, but they lack a lot of the features I like, and are more work than play,in my opinion. My choice would be a lot easier if there were more big sport utes with a semi auto instead of a belt, I like to be able to choose my gear most of the time, I just think a bit of engine power is being lost keeping the belt tight and the clutches tuned up, but it seems most manufacturers are dropping the shifters for the belts on all but sport models. Well, keep 'em coming, guys, I still would like to hear from some big bore Wolvy owners, let me know how they are running, and what you would do different if you did it again.
Thanks, everyone !!
Thanks, everyone !!
