KODIAK 400 Ultrmatic

Sounds like engine RPM is too high and the belt drive is already engaging. This causes the gears to not want to mesh upon insertion.
Check the engine RPM at idle especially when choke is on which causes the engine RPM to increase.

Thanks a lot....I am a senior and plan to use this machine for plowing my driveway because I am not too good on my feet, and I know little about ATV's....I let it warm up longer and the revs slowed and it worked fine.........but....are there manual adjustments to the idle, or is preset??

There is a manual adjustment for idle speed on the carburetor. I believe its a screw with a flexible extension, depending on the vintage. Other adjustments include gear selector position rod.
