Trouble starting Raptor 80
#11
Sorry guys, but I've slept since the last time I done this. I don't recall what the specs are. The last time I did this, I loosened both up more than what was spec'd and as far as I know, the people that bought ours hasn't had anyproblems since. (almost 3 yrs now)
It is simple but can be a pain to get everthing in there. I always stood the quad up on the rear grab bar. (shut the fuel off first) Then take the 2 caps off the head. Inside are the rocker arms. Loosen up the lock nut, then loosen the set screw. If your going to do it the right way, you'd have to get the valves in the right position (rockers should be loose) then use a feeler gauge to set the proper lash. If all else fails, loosen the lock nut then back the set screw out a turn or 2 and lock everything down and try it. Worse case, it might float the valves at wide open. I can't see it hurting anything as long as you don't go crazy loosening them. Put the 2 caps back on and see if it starts. (don't forget the gas) If I recall right, it takes about a 22mm wrench to take the caps off, about a 10mm to loosen the lock nuts, and a straight screwdriver to back the set screws out. You will have to hold the set screws with the screwdriver while tightening the lock nuts to keep them from turning . Good luck!!

Just use the standard spark plug. The spark plugs ADD no heat, it only removes heat. A hotter plug transferrs heat out, slower than a cold plug does. The only reason to ever go to a hotter plug, is if the current spark plug cant burn off the deposits, from oil burning or incomplete combustion..
Its a myth that hotter plugs will make a motor start easier.

I have the same problem with my son's 80. From day one it ate spark plugs (Fouled them). I had it in the shop 3 times to adjust the carb, still having issues. Last time cost nearly 400 dollars. When i picked it up, guess what... wouldn't run. Had to wait while the rebuilt it again. Not a happy camper... I still think it is in the carb...

I am glad I started a little debate. I am sticking with asfasasu3 advice cause I took carb apart myself most uncomplicated carb I ever seen no adj at all. Jet, bowl is about it my lawn mower even has an adj. My only problem is ATV in Vt and I am CT for a while and its snowmobile season.
PS Dragginbutt 400 is alot for that carb rebuild

crap I bought a used carb for a 100.00 from a nearly brand new raptor 80 for my old moto 4 80cc(its same carb just a different main jet and choke lever) Fired right up. The carbs wear out and wont let the quad run except on choke as the actual carb hard body wears out and lets air leak in past

I didn't mention they had to replace an air filter and dump the tank etc. I had mice living in the air induction... It was quite the mess. Plus my dealer replaced everything inside the carb including jets etc.

cool, The best way to keep the mice out is to take and put some moth ***** inside some aluminum foil and punch 5 or 6 holes in it with a screwdriver to let the smell out but that will repel the pretty well(it works on cars too)
