Big Bear 250 or Recon 250
i have to agree, if your gonna get a 250, the recon and ozark are neck and neck. ive had a recon before and it was an amzing machine, i put it to the test alot of times, very reliable. Dirtwheels mag did a shootout between the ozark and recon once, and it showed they are very similar machines and it all comes down to which machine is more comfortable for you and suits you

Id get the yamaha if it was between the honda and yam since its bigger holds more gas has better brakes drums suck plain and simple every atv should atleast have disc front brakes..or get a ozar as some of the others have said they are awsome atv's as well but the yamaha will be hard to beat I had a TimberWolf 250 got it new in 96 same motor as the big bear 250 & bear tracker and moto 4 and bruin lol anyway's as i was sayin I rode it hard VERRRY HARD and it held up and gave me nothing but good time's and memories only problem it ever had was brakes back the it had drums all around and after about 3-4 moths they started to foul up and never did work rite the whole time i had it so i had to dodge hills all the time or use first gear to slow me up and hope for the best..but the motor Rand STRONG for many years I would still have it if it hadnt of been stolen..

How does a 250 Recon with the smallest displacement and smallest carb have edge over its competitors?

If I was going to buy a new 250 utility it would be the Zook or the Honda without fail. I've got a Bruin 250 atm and it's OK. BIG problem with Yam 250's is the Stator. After hard riding, the stators burn out. Yam never used to give me a warrenty on them so I had to fork out £120 a time. To my knowledge they STILL haven't resolved the problem. NEVER HAD A SINGLE PROBLEM WITH THE ZOOK and although I have Z250's they are the same engine as the Ozark hence my decision. As I have a loyal dealer (Who used to be a Yam dealer but now Suzuki) I would get the Ozark. My long relationship with Yamaha has gone. The only Yam bike I use now is the Breeze/Grizzly and the only reason for this is no one else bothers with the 125cc market.
As I run a hire setup, the Yam 250 Raptor is no good (Clutch, chain drive etc etc). I have to use a semi-auto shaft becuase of maintenance costs and becuase novice riders can't necessarily use a clutch and besides the course I've laid out perfectly suits a semi-auto.
