Default Fuel Optimizer... is it necessary with a new HMF pipe?

Just installed an HMF Penland pipe on my buddy's Grizz 700. We noticed in the instructions that HMF recommends installation of a fuel optimizer (Dobeck, Dyna etc) with the pipe or else the exhaust temps will be too high ( read: void your warranty). The Grizz was popping a bit after the install, but we upped the fuel with the "Pod Mod" and it seems to run great now. We have another buddy running an HMF on his Renegade with no controller, an he thinks it's fine.
Any input on the necessity of a fuel crontroller with an aftermarket pipe on the Grizz 700?

Any advice? Are we doing damage to the pipe and packing? I know bumping up the fuel delivery via the "Pod Mod" is not as good as an optimizer in respect to accurate tuning, but is it covering any damage concerns?
