Default Bearing Carrier, Raptor 2004

Hello,

I have melted my bearings on my raptor. The axle also did some damage to the bearing housing. Does anybody have a recommended dealer or brand to purchase a dual row bearing carrier? I guess I am going to spend about $160 bones to get this fixed. Also, in the three months that I have had my 2001 Raptor I have put a starter oneway as well as (soon to be) bearing carrier....what else do I need to look out for? I dont want to break down in the woods.

Seems like you can do all of the preventive maintenance you want to, and you will still have problems from time to time. For every 5-6 hours of hard riding I do, I usually have 2 hours of work to do after each ride. I try to inspect everything like loose bolts, check the chain tension, check the oil, check the tires, and check all the brakes and bearings. I check all the bearings by standing the bike up on it's wheelie bar(turn the fuel off) and rock the bike back and forth while looking for play in the axle bearings and swingarm bearings. Then grab each front wheel and try to move it back and forth, in and out while looking for play in the wheel bearings, a-arm bushings, and ball joints. You shouldn't have any play in these areas. I found I had bad axle bearings this way before it was too late.

Magic Racing (magicracing.com) comes to mind for a bearing carrier. They sell SRP brand carriers. I had one on my Warrior and my buddy just put one on his Blaster and they seem to hold up well. A tapered bearing carrier has stronger bearings than the dual row, but they are usually more expensive.

Hey Man,

Thanks for the information. What you said about the bearing is pretty consistant with other posts I have read. And, you are dead-on regarding 2 hours of work to every 5 hours of riding. The first time I took out my raptor 2001 (very clean bike, low hours), I junked up the starter one way. Later I found out that this is a garantee for the 2001 Raptor.

I will check out magicracing.com Thanks for your help. Let me know if there is anything else I should look out for.

By the way...what do you recommend for oil in ATVs? Yamaha only....or can I use a sub to save money?

John

I run Yamalube in mine just because the Yamaha shop is right here at the house. As long as what you run is for motorcycles or "wet clutches" it should be fine. I have heard you can get some Motul (I think) at the auto parts store that is pretty good.

Keep a eye on how the transmission shifts, 2001 were known for trans problems.
The only other problem thay are know for you have taken care of, the one way starter clutch. 660 Raptors are great quads I've had several over the years

B.T.W. I have a stock used bearing carrier at the shop for one of thoes if you don't buy aftermarket
