Grizzly Starter Problem
#1
O.K. guys dig deep, I've read some of the other guy's posts on this subject but the same solutions are not helping me.
Here is the problem. I did a complete frame swap on my 2002 grizz, it started just finr when I pulled it into the garage. When I got it all back together I hear the imfamous buzz from my starting relay.
Here's what I've done so far.
Checked the battery and fuses.
Cleaned ALL the connections.
Installed a brand new relay.
Any help would be greatlly appreciated, Thanks

Have you checked the routing of the wires? It is possible that you have pinched a wire somewhere during the frame swap. Also check all of the connectors and make sure none of the wires or pins have pulled from the backside of the plugs. Also check your ground wires and ensure that all of your grounds are sufficient. If you installed a brand new frame or even a used frame, did you clean the ground connections to make sure you have a clean ground?
I know that wiring can be/is very annoying to deal with but 99% of the time it is something that is easily over looked. Hang in there and keep us posted.

Same exact thing happen to me. washed my griz, started it then put it away. Came to start it the next day and it sounded like a buzzing sound kind of like an ark welder. So I went out and bought a relay,
no improvement, It was the battery.... my battery was at showing 10v not 12v. that makes the starter relay jump continuously. So I charged the barttery for 24 hours on slow and puff it run fine.
hope that helps

Yamaha uses ground to activate the starter solenoid - the solenoid is "hot" at all times, fed directly from the battery.
The starter button just completes a circuit to ground - the blue/black striped wire going into the solenoid is the ground source wire from the starter button. If memory serves me right, the actual ground source for the button is through the handlebars as the switch box is clamped to the handlebars. Also, sometimes a good ground is not completed through pushing the start button due to dirty contacts on the button - causing the buzz.
You can determine a grounding issue with the solenoid by jumping directly from the battery negative to the blue/black striped wire connection on the starter solenoid.
Also, as mentioned, low battery voltage will cause the buzz at the solenoid.

Ahhhh the sweet smell of success. Thanks for the reply you never know when something you say might spur a persons thought process.
"99% of the time it is something that is easily over looked". The problem I had was everything worked when I pulled it into the garage and two days later when the frame swap was finished I had my problem. This should mean all the components are good and it's some thing I did during the swap.
The ground cable from the battery was swapped with the ground cable from the starting coil so basicly when I hit the start button the coil would close and short the Pos of the battery straight to ground instead of going through the starter then to ground. The two ends of the cable looked the same so it was a easy mistake.
Although no one gave me a direct soulution to my problem I want to thank everyone that replied, each comment took me through another thought process that ended with a fixed bike.

Helpful info here, thanks. Last month it fired up, I cleaned and put it away.
I have the same problem with the buzzing now. I've had battery issues ever year due to it sitting for long periods of time. Normally I'd hit it with the maintainer before starting and it'd fire right up. Not this time. Last dead battery I remember the buzzing be a lower pitch and slower. This time it's loud and fast. Next battery will be disconnected when stored.
The solenoid has the 2 - 30 amp fuses on it right or is that the relay? That's what is buzzing on mine.
As you can tell, I'm new at working on my machine. Before it was taken to the shop with any problems, which was rare. This is more fun. Thanks for the help.
