Default '98 Wolverine

Borrowed my dads wolverine, and didn't even get to ride it before it started screwing up. It cranks and will idle fine, but when given gas it boggs down and backfires loudly. I've been through the carb 3 times so I don't think it is an issue. I have also read about the rev limiter getting stuck. This would explain the bogging down, but would that be the reason for the backfiring? Any help would be appreciated.

It was the rev limiter. He should have bought a Cat.
