Default question...

i only asked this Q here cause i dont wanna get a biased opinion, i have been reading alot about the z400 and honda 400 and people say the z is better and faster and more relaible. is this true? and i really just wanna know the basics about both machines. also how much reliabity do you lose when you do mods to both, internal mods, thanks for all the help

I've seen them race in a straight line drag race in the sand and whoever took off first would win. They are real close. As far as reliability they are both reliable atvs.I like the z better because it is water-cooled and has reverse. But I think the newer hondas have reverse. The mods just depend on what you do and who does them.

In my experiences, the Honda 400 is much more reliable than a Z400. You can beat the heck out of a 400EX and it takes it all in stride. But a liquid cooled engine is always better than an air cooled one - so the Z would be better in that department. And anytime you mod your engine, you do reduce reliability some, but, like Qwoder stated, if the mod is done right, you won't have many problems. The main thing is getting the jetting and carb settings right. If you have that right, it will reduce a lot of problems.

I may seemed biased, because I have a 400ex. With that said, I would buy a Z over an EX, except for the real slow tight trails. The EX will grunt lower than the shorter stroked Z. The Z will rev faster and produce more power.

When modding them the Z will gain power better and remain more reliable, because of the water cooling. Either quad can go too 440cc's without any real risk of liabililty, when built correctly.

My 400 is a 2000 model and in 02 I had it bored and stroked to 440. It has always ran fine and I have had no problems with the cylinder or gaskets.
