Default Hot old Kodiak

My '96 Kodiak 400's fan won't come on at all. I unplugged the fan and ran some aux. power from the battery. Fan works fine. There's only a oil cooler, so I assume that there is a temperature sending unit on the motor somewhere. Also, the hot light doesn't come on either. Could this be a part of the problem? Maybe it's a blown fuse but I only found one so far and that one was fine. Last weekend the motor was making a noise after warmup. My mechanic said 90% the valves needed adjustment. So he adjusted them. Went riding today, and the noise was back but with a higher pitch. Timing chain? The bike has 3500 km. Any thoughts?
