There is no negative side on a solenoid! A solenoid is a switch: High current positive on one side. When you push the starter button, it activates the solenoid to take that high current positive power and switch it directly to the starter. What I meant you to try was putting positive battery juice on the starter terminal itself, which would bypass the solenoid, to make sure you could rule out the solenoid being bad.
BTW your fireworks show means your battery and grounds are good!

do i need to take out the solenoid first? if so, do i hook the negative side of the jumper cable to the frame of the bike, and then hook the positive side of the jumper cable to the starter wire (or the red/positive battery cable)........after i take it off of the solenoid?

sorry for all the dumb questions. i have followed the cables from the starter back to the solenoid. are these the cables that i should be working with?

Yes, leave the negative grounded to the frame. All you are trying to do here is wire past the solenoid to see if it is bad or not. There are 2 terminals on a solenoid. 1 side goes to the battery. The other goes to the starter. If you wire the battery side togather with the starter side, your starter should start wizzing away.

I'm not sure we'll be able to help you out much more than that without looking at it!!

i went home and tried that and got a nice firework show like last time. i hooked it up that way last time.

i took off the cables to bypass the solenoid like you guys suggested. i did hook up the ground cable from the car battery to the ground cable that hooks up to the battery.....(i thought that cable is already connected to the frame) is this right, or should i just hook it up to the frame????

thanks again for all your help!!!
