Default YFZ450 or 400ex

I'm not looking for a YFZ450 alone but I wasn't really getting any answers on the other forums so I thought I'd come to one of the company forums.

I've asked a few questions on here before but I'm starting to narrow it down. I was wondering which of the 450's is going to have the least maitenance, and which will last the longest. Basically which would be the cheapest to keep running with little downtime.

Also I was wondering if I should even get a 450 because most of the riding I do is trail riding, but me and my friends do race in the trails when we ride sometimes and there's alot of open fields where i could crank it out so I was wondering which would be best for what I'm doing.

I do know the 400ex does have a good bit of power and most of the time it would be enough but who doesn't enjoy just being able to hit the throttle and stand it up out of a corner.

I'm 5'9" and 140 pounds

So any advice is appreciated. I was just wondering what some other people thought would be the best.

On the trails with a 450 you will be shifting a lot more than you will with a 400 due to the gearing.

400ex's are very good trail quads and are very dependable, as long as you stay away from the 440's IMO they have alotta head gasket probs and overheating 416's and 426's are the way to go, for the trails though id have to say either a yfz450 or a honda 450r, the hondas id believe would prolly last longer, they have a unicam and are easier to work on then the yfz's but both are an excellent choice.

Sounds like a Raptor 700 is what you need. If you get a 400EX, you will lose a lot of races against your friends if they are on 450's. But the 400EX's are great sport trail quads and are very dependable.

FYI the 450s will beat the 700 in stock form. Add the 3 main mods and you got a rocket.

I don't get Raptor owners. Some body can be asking about a completely different ride, like they are here, and they ALWAYS have to recommend a Raptor. The Raptor is a nice quad but he didn't say he wanted a Raptor. He didn't ask about a Raptor.

I understand it was a suggestion. The guy didn't ask about a Raptor, why suggest something he doesn't want?

It appears that neither one of his choices will be the best machine for his riding style. A Raptor 700 will suit his needs, IMO. If he wants to win drag races the 400EX won't cut it. If he wants a good trail machine the 450 won't cut it. But to suit you, to answer his question, between a 450 and a 400EX, I would go with the 450.

FYI the 450 is not faster than a 700. We took a 400EX with 440 big bore, pipe and all the goodies, a YFZ450 with a pipe, filter, adjustable CDI, and my stock 700 to the dragstrip(see pics). The 400EX lost every race, I beat the 450 twice and he beat me twice. When he beat me, it was by .2 of a second in the 1/8 mile, I have the time tickets to prove it. I think if I added "3 main mods" I could lose at least .2 of a second off my time.

Let's not leave out the Suzuki fellers.......(if we are suggesting other brands)

If you like the 400ex but are liking the idea of more power for those open trails, look at the z400...... The Z has better suspension and more power, and the new ones even have EFI which is a nice bonus.... even brand new they are a lot cheaper then a Raptor 700 (which is also a great choice) but if you like the handling and ergonomics of the 400ex you will like them on the z400 too since they are very similar.......

FWIW of the original two I'd take the YFZ..... they are geared low enough for all but the most technical woods, and in the open they are a rush.... but all the 450s require more maintenance than any of the 400 or 700 options.... if low maintenance is what you want go with the 400ex....... totally bulletproof and totally fun....

You are a better rider than him. That's all I can say. The acceleration on the 450s is better than that of a 700. The 700 (stock) pulls a little slower than the 450s. The 450's should be able to get to top speed faster. That just proves that you are a better rider.
