Problems with my Raptor
#1
I recently was on a x country ride that went about 100 miles. On the way back, My Raptor kept dying when idling. For example, when I was going down hill and just let it coast it would die. To fix this I adjusted the screw on the carb so that it would idle higher, but not die so I could make it back. I went out to satrt it to go on another ride yesterday, and it won't start. I returned the screw back to the original position and nothing...It is backfiring out the intake when trying to start, and my air filter is soaked with fuel. I have plenty of spark and good compression. Any ideas?
Your help is appreciated, my wife is due back from military training in a week, so I would like to have both bikes running so we can go riding.

You say your "air filter is soaked with fuel"
I take it you mean it's soaked with air filter oil, right?
Did you just clean the air filter?
Using too much air filter oil will cause the symptoms you describe.

GrnXnham: No, when I say that there is fuel, I mean that there is actual gas that is soaking the air filter. When I place my hands over the back side of carbs, there is gas that is spraying out when I am turning it over. I also found that the boots that connect the carbs had slipped off. I have been told that I should just switch to Edelbrock carbs, but I do not want to do that until I know the problem actually lays within the carbs. I have been told that my timing chain has broke, or that I have major mechanical problems, but that does not make sense to me, seeing how I have good compression.

Reseat the boots but leave the clamps loose, then loosen the airbox bolts, then push the airbox toward the carb and re-tighten the airbox bolts, then tighten the clamps.
There is no need to change carbs.

I decided to get back at getting the raptor running. It still does not start. I have replaced the spark plug, and tried to get it to start. I think that the mixture screw is so far out of adjustment that I am just wasting my time. Is there any way to know where it should be at in order to start. I have gas and spark, but it won't start. I also have heard of a compression release or something similar that may be out of adjustment? Any help would be great.

You can't adjust the mixture screw enough to just make it not run. You've got a timing problem or something it sounds like.

Beefy,
You were right. I placed the carbs back onto the back, and they blew out of the boots when I tried to start it. My buddy had tightened down the clamps, so I tried it again and made sure they were tight. Same result. I tore it down and i have a bent valve. Is there a good rebuild kit available. Since I am going to tear it down, I might as well make sure that I make it run how I want it to. (Fast). Thanks for everyones help
