Default Building your own cam?

Hello everyone? have you heard of anyone building and custom grinding there own cam? i've heard if you do it corectly you can add lift and even change the duration by welding, grinding, and pollishing the lobes... any one ever heard of or tried this??

Oh, I suppose you could do it, but you have to know precisely what you are doing and have all the right equipment to do it. You have to know how far you can push it with the cam, what is too much for the current set up. Its best just left to the companies that already have done all the research for you and mass produce with all the right equipment.

i think my dad knows how to do it but i dont think its really worth the time trying to do so unless you got extra cams, alot of time, and you like to tinker with things

i'm actually going to school for engine building, so i know alot about v-8s and stuff quads are kinda new to me and i'm really intrested in them! i have all of the right equipment and just wanted to get some info on it... all of the info is great, but the head i have is all ported and polished flowbench tested and performance valve job with a 3angle cutter, valves are back cut, and head is resurfaced, so far! its going on an 88 warrior.

i dont think you could get even close to precise with a grinder and a welder. i would say you would be better off to send one off and get it reground. i would say that would just not be a good thing to try, if it takes a lobe out its gonna put a bunch of metal in your motor.

Yep, for $125 + 100 for valve springs you can buy a cam that has already been designed, engineered, tested, and dynoed. I would say that's cheap compared to what could screw up if a custom cam was not made properly. Is 1/2 horsepower worth all of the extra trouble?
