Piston Kit for Raptor ???

I can say that there is a huge difference. I haven't had a chance to dyno it yet but I have it in the works. The most significant gain was in the mid range and bottm. I'm hoping that a different head pipe will move the power up the rpm range a little. The way it is now it is almost too much bottom end it makes it hard to exit a low speed corner with the power on in any sort of large quanity. The jetting is A LOT more picky now though. Before if you were a little off it was kind of hard to notice. Now if it is off even a little bit it will let you know. As far as comparing it to other machines, I have been around a lot of others with mods and without but in Glamis the only other quad I found while I was there that clearly beat it was a very moded Banshee(RZ cylinders ect.).There was also a DS that came awful close(Woods stage?, could get a straight answer). When it is jetted right it flies but I know a better filter and different headpipe would help even more.

HOw do you like the carbon fiber wheels? I was thinking of getting them but not sure how they would hold up against rocks etc. Did you put the piston kit in after the pipe, compairing the differance in the two, 1st the raptor with the pipe and then the raptor with the piston kit, did the piston kit give you as much of a gain as the pipe did because I know my pipe help alot. Do you still have stock cam? Thanks for the info and 1 more thing are you running race fuel?

Lovmaraptor,
I'm just wondering. Do you have to run 100% race fuel? or a combination? Also, do you think the stock bore high comp piston would increase more mid than bottom? It seems that what I have found is the gain is mostly in the bottom. Lord knows this thing has a good bottom end pull. It really needs more mid to top.
Again, I am just wondering what YOUR thoughts on this are? Your response is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Swytak.

I would recommend the stock bore first because once you have bored your cylinder out to 102mm that is it. If you ever have to rebuild it means buying a new cylinder. Second because the gain from the compression is where the majority of the power comes from. The bore is only a small gain by itself. In order to make good use of extra bore you should work on the air flow(not just aircleaner and exhaust but flowbenching, backcutting valves/seats, port matching etc.). Third the extra expense of the work(boring), and finding someone that you trust to do it.
Yes I am running the stock cam for now. I eventually will get one but i would like to try a different headpipe first. Hopefully a headpipe that is tuned for top end instead of bottom will spread the power up the rpm range. I could also retime the cams but I will cross that bidge later.
I did have one of the techs form the local shop help some to make sure that I didn't miss anything(two heads are better than one). You only get one shot at it with the 686 so I didn't make a move without double and triple checking it.
I am very satisfied with the service(9of10) and parts(10of10). They went above and beyond the call to help me. The availablity is still the only hold-up.
I haven't had to run race gas at all. If I wanted to I could gain maybe 1 or 2 hp by leaning the mixture and using the race gas.
Any comp. increase will usually increase hp across the board. The bore increase will usually direct it slightly toward the bottm end.
I still haven't got my c.f. wheels. Now they are telling me march.
I did my exhaust can first and then everything else at once. It did make a huge gain over just the exhaust but I can't put numbers to them yet. I have riden with Raptors that just have an exhaust and I can say that the gain was worth it to me.
Hopefully that answers your questions,Rude,swytak,xtreme165. If you need anything else drop a post.

Rude,
I haven't been told to change connecting rods however I have hear that at around 55-60hp ot is a good idea. I don't think I have that much YET. Especially at my altitutde. As far as machine work required for the stock piston installation, you have to do a hone and crosshatch. If you don't the rings won't seat properly.
mtecate4g,
Thanks for the tip. I already had the prodesign on the way. As far as the air box lid goes, it really depends on how comfortable you feel with your filter. I would never do that with the stock filter. The boys at alba told me that the best dyno results they got came with the lid on with no holes and the snorkle off.
