Default 1992 Big Bear won't run---Carb?

Inherited a well used Big bear 4x4. I think it is a 1992 judging by the dual throttle cable carb set up that was only used between 1987 and 1992 on the 4x4. I got it to start and run for a second several times but the float wouldn't close so I think it was just flooding out. I took the carb apart and realized I wasn't the first one to do so. The carb is pretty messed up, like one of the float supports was broken off and glued back on etc. Carbs of this vintage are $700 at the dealer and $500 on the net. I've never owned an ATV so here is what I want to know.

1. Where can I get a used carb, besides Ebay and Craigslist, I'm already watching those.
2. Does any one know of a company that makes an adapter that would allow me to use a newer aftermarket carb, one that is more readily available and cheaper?

First I would research to see what other makes and models might have used that particular carb. Then if you goggle used motorcycle/atv parts you can have some prior knowledge to help locating your carb. If that fails you may be able to locate the parts you need to restore the one you have. Good luck and let us know how it works out.

Thanks every one. I started tinkering with it today and adjusted the float some. Now it is hard to start when it's cold but it will idle once I get it started. I backed it down the drive and it went ok in 1st gear, then but when I shifted the motor bogged down and it died. does this still sound like a fuel issue?

your problem is your float has a leak and felling with fuel which weighs it down and wont allow it to shut.think of a fishing bobber with a hole in it,it will no longer float same with carb float it is what it is a float.it has to float to shut fuel off.order a new float and it wouldnt hurt to get a new float needle to this should fix your problem

I would look into a 93 on up Warrior carb, I don't know how your carb fastens to your intake ( Warrior bolts on to an intake boot flange) but it may be worth looking into, the intakes and carbs on ebay are real cheap, and it is a simple 1 cable carb, you may also need to get a throttle assembly, but they are cheap too.
