Now I am not an ATV tech but I am a licensed auto tech and normally when you try like you said and then a back fire it is a timing issue. Now if it is an EFI then you may have a few places to look.. Computer. timing itself. Make sure the injector is firing.. Good luck

i would start with the basics. check for fuel, and spark. and how good the spark is. if it just all of a sudden just started happening from after the last ride, we're you in any water, or did it get wet from washing. I would also just start pushing all the wiring harness connections to make sure they are connected properly, or pull some apart if they could have got wet and blow them out with a bit of air. If all that seems to check out. I would try disconnecting the battery for about 5 min and then connecting it. It may also be the throttle position sensor (located on ride side of quad, behind the frame just as it starts to arc down. it's a little black plastic round housing with two bolts holding it in place) provided it's the same as the '06. If all else fails, it's a trip to the dealer. and if it's warranty, call you're salesman and tell him to pay your gas there and back.

I had problems on the trail last Summer. It died on me giving her hell through a muddy spot. Then after sitting a few minutes, would start and use the fuel in the line that was pumped during the initial key turn. The accesory was not being powered on (the fuel pump would not run once started). I found out there is a roll over sensor and they can get stuck(quite common). I guess water doesn't help either. Mine dried out and fired right up!
It could be a pluged fuel filter as well. Those are super cheap, and easy to replace. So are fuel pumps. Do you have a shop manual?
