Any thoughts on how often to replace the paper oil filter in an 05 YFZ450 that's running synthetic 10w-40? I replace the oil every two days of riding (or ~10hrs). My guess would be about every 30 hrs (or on the 3rd oil change)?

I figure it should be about the same amount of ride time as any other quad.

Also any thoughts on using synthetic vs regular?

 

You are replacing synthetic oil after 2 days of riding? That is crazy IMO. You are throwing alot of money away for sure. I change my oil and filter at the same time and that is at 300 mile intervals using ordinary Valvoline ATV oil. Just for the record, I also feel that I am throwing good oil away changing at that interval. IMO if you are draining relatively clear oil out it probably is still good. You are riding a higher performance quad than I am so I am sure that your intervals should be a bit sooner, but 2 days seems too often. None of my business, but that is my opinion.

 

I have heard that regular synthetic oils are bad for the friction plates on the wet clutch. Not really bad i guess but they make the clutch slip more.

Unless it is like motorcycle specific oil that is used with wet clutches.

Anyways i think you are changing your oil way to fast. I would say change the oil and filter maybe every 6 months. Checking the oil ever gas fill.

 

yeah thanks for the input guys. I thought that might be changing to often, i havent actually changed mine yet, was thinking about it, ive only been riding this quad for about 3 long days like 15 to 20 hrs. My last ride was a yz 250 2 stroke ( 1998) and my opinion on 2 stroke bikes that you ride hard should have frequent oil changes, just wasnt sure about the quad.
