Default clicking transmission in 2005 kodiak

I recently bought a used kodiak. It only had 124 miles on it, about twice that now. When I first start it up, sometimes it clicks (like fan blades on a box fan hitting something). If I put it back in park and rock it a bit, it will go into reverse but then often doesn't want to come out of reverse. I have to back around for a minute or two and then everything is fine. Is this normal? Am I just not letting it warm up enough or do I have a potential problem I should get looked at before my 60-day warranty expires?

That is definitely not normal and you should take it in for sure. I have an 04 450 Kodiak and I don't experience such symptoms.

You should be able to start it if cold with half choke and let it run for 40 seconds or so then it just idles until I think it is good to go. And a healthy Kodiak should not be doing that. Putting it into H or L from park it should go when you hit the gas, same with reverse. Hopefully you get it fixed under your warranty, which I am sure you will.

They are great bikes.

When my wife tries to shift into gear with too high an idle it makes that kind of noise as she shifts it. Is it possible that there is a shifter adjustment that needs to be made. Maybe it is not resting completely in neutral.

The reverse problem sounds like it could just be a shift shaft(shaft from shifter to side of block) adjustment. You can adjust it by undoing the lock nuts on both ends and rotating the shaft in either direction. Rotate one way to extend the shaft and the other to shorten it. Only do small adjustments like 1/4 turn and test. Mark it first so you can set it back if needed.
If that doesn't work try this.

There's a large bolt near the shift cam on the outside of the block. It's hollow with a heavy spring inside and a ball that sits on the spring. This ball and spring hold the shift cam in gear as you move the shifter. If either the spring or ball are worn out the shifting may not engage or could stay between 2 gears.
The clicking sound your hearing is probably the cam not getting into the gear you need. Undo the bolt to see if all parts are there. You may need a small magnet to get the ball out. Once you've got it out look inside with a flashlight as you shift the shifter. You should be able to see the dimples on the shift cam rotate by. These are what the ball falls into and holds it in the corect gear. Make sure you can see a dimple for each gear. This step may also help with the shift shaft adjustment.
