How can you tell if you have one? Can you tell without tearing apart the motor?

The only time I have ever seen a bent shift fork, was on my friends warrior and he had a bunch of other stuff wrong with his bike. The bike didnt want to move in 3rd or 4th gear (he did end up having 2 shift forks bent, dont remember if they were for that gear though) and when he shifted into those gears it shifted different. The shift kinda jammed a bit before it should have went into gear, and you had to hit the shift hard to make it go into gear. As I said though, he had several other problems with his bike at the time and they could have been the cause of the problems. The only way to actually tell if a fork is bent, to the best of my knowledge, is to split the case and look. It might be a good idea to look anyways and put some new bearings in it while its apart.
