Honda leads the motorcycle industry on other fronts as well. As the leader in four-stroke technology, Honda is committed to producing motorcycles, scooters and ATVs that utilize low emission, fuel efficient four-stroke engine designs.
Further to this pledge, American Honda announced today that beginning with the 2002 model year, Honda would only mass-produce four-stroke powered on and off road motorcycles, ATVs and scooters for the US market.
"Honda is, above all, an engine company," said Blank. "Our four-stroke engine designs will set new industry standards for quiet, efficient, power. And four-strokes are a responsible answer to environmental issues."

key word -ONLY produce four stroke

hate to say it but the 2 stroke is a dying breed, Arctic cat hasa 4 stroke sled ready to go, trust me this decade will end two strokes the only hope we have is the Bush administration and the woderful republicans that don't care about the environment, i voted Bush. if gore had won 2 strokes would be out very soon. but hey a 400 4 stroke Banshee won't happen, the raptor is a 660.

Well you can always come up to Canada and buy a 2 stroke Bombardier sled and smuggle it back in the States future.Ontario has 350,000 registered sled alone so at the most they would make a special 4 stroke thumper line for export to the States.

What about motor cross bike will Honda stop making them?I read the MX fans do not enjoy watching 250 4 strokes racing 125 2strokes.They want the same size motors in every class of race no matter what type it is.

Dude off road motor cycles are the Xr series of bikes. They are not motorcross bikes. Honda will still mass produce the Cr line of 2 stroke bikes in the year 2002.

ERICsRaptor:
You say that 2 strokes will only be available to racers.
Impossible. For one simple reason, the mx/sx racing "laws" do not allow a racer to ride a prototype (that me, you , the neighbor couldn't buy). The engine lowend has to be the same as the bike sold in dealershipd, the frame geometry, the suspensions...etc.
Remember some years ago (4-5), when Suzuki sold their RMs with comventional forks (non upside down). These were WAAAAAy better for most of the riders, but not rigid enough for the tops. They were not allowed to put an upside down, 3 years later, the stock RM had an upsd. Is this explicit enough? You will ride what fits the best to win. Simple as that.

I am not a Yamaha rider but a Banshee would not be a Banshee without that 350 two-stroke screamer of an engine...
