Default 2000 Kodiak gas in air filter box

This is my first post, hi everybody. I bought a used 2000 Kodiak 400 4x4 a couple of months ago. It has been running great until last week. It would not start, so I bought a new battery and spark plug. Still no go, I checked the gas line and spark, both good. Next I took off the cover to the air filter box to find it 1/4 full of gas. Not good obviously. I cleaned out the gas and cranked it without putting the filter or cover back. Started instantly. Then the hose that connects to the air filter box lid (about pinky size) started spraying gas into the box. What is going on?
Thanks!!!

I don't have a little hose going into my box. Are you talking about a hose that is the same one that is on top of the gas cap? Where it connects into handle bar area? Little thin black hose?

I wasn't sure so I looked. No, it isn't that hose. This one goes into the engine block on the left side. About the same size hose however.

That would be the crankcase breather hose. Check your oil to make sure you don't have your crankcase full of gas. That would be the only way I would think gas could be spraying from there.
If it's full of gas, you have other problems, like a sticking float needle in the carb would be the first to check.

I've had a similar issue, and after I got the gas cleaned out of the box, it'll start fine, until I try replacing the breather box lid, then it dies immediately. Anyone have any suggestions?

I have an old Yamaha that does this, if I forget to turn the gas off then the crankcase gets a nice drink. Next time I fire it up gas sprays all over from the breather hose. Other than that, I just turn the gas off on mine and I am all good.

I just found this thread. Interesting because I just bought a '95 kodiak that use to leak gas (until I rebuilt the carb last night). And I had found the air box about 1/4 full of what I thought was watered down oil. Now I'm thinking it was a gas and oil mix and my crank case is full of gas.

Another thing is that I would find small "oil" leaks on my garage floor, although it was very easy to wipe up with a rag (easier than a normal oil spill), again now I'm thinking it's a gas/oil mix.

I think I'll change the engine oil before I ride it again. Thanks for the info guys.

Default overflow stopped up???

doesn't the carburetor have an overflow ? if there is too much gas going into the carburetor , due to a stuck float it should drain from the overflow instead of going into the crankcase .try cleaning it or even better rebuilding it . if i'm wrong let me know.maybe i'm missing something.
