My guess on your four wheel drive problem is that your push putton switch, which switches from 2 wheel to 4 wheel drive isnt working. I have an 03 Big Bear and my buddy has an 06 Wolverine both of us have had to replace the 4wd switch.
Follow the wire going from your 4wd switch, somewhere under the front rack by the handlebars there is a plug where the switch attaches (if the 05 is the same as the 03). You can try unplugging it and maybe that will disengage the 4wd.
I tried to install a cheap universal switch from my local auto store to replace it, but that didnt work. I had to buy a new push button switch from Yamaha. If I remember correctly it cost me about $80.

I bought my big bear used when it was one year old and the reverse **** has never worked as long as I have had it. I just make sure I make a complete stop before shifting to reverse, and be careful not to shift down when your in first gear.
