is your rope muddy? or discolored like mud? if so it might have had water inside that could have rusted the spring out causing it not to recoil. Let me say that I don't know anything about this breed of atv. Just a general answer.

kram2724, I agree, there might have been some water that got in there if the rubber pull tee wasn't seated properly against the recoil starter housing, and you could have a corroded coil spring or it rust-welded itself to the sheave drum, which holds the coiled rope. If the previous owner used only the electric start all the time, that could easily happen. I've never done the job, but I looked at my 2002 Wolverine manual and it looks like it would be a pretty easy job to open it up and inspect. There's only about 6 parts inside, including the rope. If you don't have one, I'd recommend getting a soft copy of a manual. You can get one on e-bay for about $10. It'll pay for itself on the first job - you can print just the pages you need to do a job.

Let us know how you make out.

Search the forums for my posts. I have a free copy of the wolverine manual on a hosting site. Good luck.
Edit: Here you go- just hit free download and enter the 4 digit number LIT-11616-FX-37.pdf - 32.6 Mb
