Please help "Newbie taken to cleaners"

Hi all,
Just found your website and I really need some help.
In attempts to do some father and kids bonding I purchased a 2007 Big Bear 250. I thought this would be the right fit for the kids and offer some great fun. So I shopped and I shopped and located one about 2.5 hours from home.
So here is the problem. I drove to the place to pick it up. As expected the quad was impeccable. Knowing nothing about them, I watched the guy fire it up, test drive etc. Ok, pay the money and leave. This by the way was purchased at a motorsports dealer. I get the quad home and begin to familiarize myself with it. I decided to learn how to use the pull start feature. I begin to pull and lift and lift and lift. Guess what no tension. Not being to mechanically inclined, I would say this is not right.
Of course, this was bought as is. I could just about puke right now.
Is their any good news that will come of this?

Buy a service manual for $8.00, and fix it yourself. Teach your kids to thoroughly inspect everything they buy. The dealer didn't, you didn't, and you got left holding the bag.

If it fired up on the electric start ok, and it ran ok, I don’t think that you have a big problem, it just sounds like the springs on the pull start aren’t engaging, take the pull start cover off, pull the rope and see if the little springs move outwards, if they don’t they might just be locked up, rusted or something might just need a good clean, but its not a big job.

Alot of pull start engines have a compression release to make pull starting easier. It is almost impossible to pull or kick start some engines without it. The compression release might be up near the top of the engine - should be a small lever. If it has it, flip it up everytime you pull the rope. This opens the exhaust valve on startup to relieve some compression temporarilly to make the engine turn over easier.

The dogs may be broken or the little spring that forces them out may be out of place. Not a bit deal, easy fix. I'd take it off just to be sure that there are no loose parts inside. Be careful putting it back on, don't strip the threads.
