Question 2005 kodiak 450 backfire

hey guys i got a question about backfiring, today i rode my kodiak not to far but i was on the higher end of the thottle going up the road and when i let off about when it was almost around mid throttle slowing down it did a big pop out the exhaust. it was about 84 today. it only happened one time and i tried at least 3 times to make it happen again, any suggestions, just took it to a small dealer and had it serviced, pilot screw is at 1 3/4 and needle is stock, i have a 2 inch exhaust tip with spark arrestor if that matters? otherwise runs great! let me know guys!!

If you play with your exhaust it can throw off the jetting. May need to change one jet size.

my kodiak did the same thing, it would happen very rarely when engine braking from mid to high throttle, i"modded" the stock exhaust but with the stock jetting and it did that. then i put the HMF on and rejetted and its great now.

all right thanks guys, do you think i would really have to rejet, would i be able to just play with teh pilot screw or raise or lower teh needle clip, the dealer told me that just the 2 inch tip shouldn't make me have to rejet.

let me know

I wouldn't even worry about it. I had a stock 2005 Kodiak that backfired during the warm season and stop during the cold season. My girlfriend just bought a leftover 07 Grizzly 450 and it does the same thing. I had 2500 on my Kodiak when I traded it without any motor problems.

Thanks buck, I'm going riding on Sunday so I'll see. From what I researched I found that it could be as simple as turning the a/f screw out about 1/4 turn or just making my idle a little higher. What do you guys think?

Let me know.

Thanks, Dan

I have an 07 Grizzly 450 that backfires if doing exact thing as you describe at times. It has around 300 miles on it.
If I do a more gradual slowdown, it does not backfire.
I'm told it may be from running too lean an air mixture.

Default Backfireing

The backfire is due to the pilot jet/circuit being too lean. If you change your exhaust or intake(air cleaner or snorkel) you need to rejet. Although this is not a major problem, a lean pilot jet will not hurt anything, it is annoying to hear the backfiring. The pilot jet could be clogged, I just worked on a Kodiak 400 with the same problem.

Thanks for the reply sluck man, my exhaust is only a tip and was told u wouldn't ever need to rejet with just that tip (not a whole exhaust) and my air cleaner and box is stock. do you think maybe turning the pilot screw from 1 3/4 turns out to 2 turns out would fix my problem?

let me know, thanks, Dan
