Dune-friendly Warrior?

Default Dune-friendly Warrior?

What would be recommended to make a Warrior more able in the sand?
First, I'd like to know what would be the minimum needed to keep from being embarrassed and/or just from being miserable.
Then I'd like to know what modifications would be considered if I want my Warrior to be a worthy dune-machine.
Finally, say I wanna throw around some cash and playing in the garage. What would you do, WITHOUT ruining dependability or causing it to be too tempermental, to make it kind of a screamer?

First, what has already been done to it? The most essential thing I can think of is tires. A decent set of paddles will really help get you around. The Warrior is never going to be a power monger, so don't bother with the straight edge, go with more of a handling design. Fronts are beneficial too, but not as necessary. After that, any mod that will get you more power will help. I would stay away from crazy big bores if you want reliability, but you could go a little bigger, a little higher compression. An exhaust and intake would round out the package nicely. A cam could also be a good investment, they help most after the other stuff has been done.

The best mod for sand for the price is paddle tires. go with a smaller tire if you don't mind losing some ground clearance so your warrior can turn them easier. i have a 450r with 21'' paddle height and it is perfect. so for a warrior i would suggest a 18'' or 20'' tire i have itp sand geckos they are nicer in turns because of the v shape but any brand with that profile would do the same. Also aftermarket exhausts are nice because it will benefit you on other places than sand too. but it will be more expensive with the pipe and jetting. And it's not always about the largest machine it helps but at least half is rider skill if you can shift fast and know the right gear and RPM for the different hills a better rider on a smaller quad with less mods can do better.

I've been out of the loop for quite some time, but my last Warrior had the K&N filter, jet kit and a Big Gun. I know that I will never buy Big Gun again, because the fitment was so bad that I had to cut it up and remake it so it would fit. For the money spent on it, it shoulda fit like a glove!

I'm eyeballing the 366 kit, with the 10.5 c.r. If I were to use this setup, along with proper jetting(in stock carb), a filter swap, and a pipe/muffler, what kind of power gains would I be looking at? (Maybe a new thread for this question, huh?)

I'm open for suggestions on what exhaust to run. And don't say Big Gun.lol

I would definately get paddles, but I also want enough ***** to turn em, too.

the warriors are actually crappy compared to most bikes for being used in the dunes due to there lack of power, there heavy and nose heavy at that, but it could be made a fun bike of course just not as ideal...if i were to hit dunes on a warrior i would have at least the mods that i have done...but with even that id be much happier with a stock banshee over my warrior.

I have had very good results with HMF systems, but I have never owned a Warrior. If you go exhaust, make sure you get one that can meet any dB requirements of your public riding areas. I actually would budget out what you are looking to spend in upgrades, and weigh that against possibly seling the Warrior and getting a Z400 or higher class machine.

actually warriors work pretty good in the dunes, the admin on yfm350 has the 366 with a .430 which is more of a mid cam, hd valve springs and a edlebrock carb and hes got somethin like 35 hp on the dyno. hes also got a dmc exhaust. IT CAN BE DONE EASILY

idk about your warrior, but i built a rack/winch system for the front of mine for a reason, and it STILL pulls wheelies when i don't want it to(while leaning forward).

as far as performance, it might cost a bit, but there is alot of options out there, and with the 366 kit, proper jetting/exhaust/cam u can get alot out of a warrior, i purchased mine the way it is, mine has the big bore kit(466cc iirc) with a dg exhaust, uni filter, jetted carb, and a mid cam in it, and i can turn my 22" tires just fine on any surface....if anything spin them whenever i want....a quad is what you make it, not what heresay is, might cost you alot of money to get it to match up with a bigger quad, but it can be done.

For the extra load and heat put on the motor by the drag of the sand on the tires, an aftermarket oil cooler will help keep the temps down, which will make it easier to maintain power output to the tires in the deeper sand. A very quick and easy mod is to find a Big Bear 350 oil filter cover, it comes with oil line fittings on it, maybe you can find one on ebay with the cover, lines and cooler. If not, go to NAPA, or parts store, and find fittings to thread in, then use hi temp oil line hose to go to an automotive oil cooler that you can mount up front to cool down the oil. The guys at Fourstroke Tech sell a kit for about 100 bucks, but this involves drilling and tapping holes in the side cover and cam cover, to route oil to the top end, which runs much hotter on an air cooled engine. Heat is your main enemy on the dunes, sand pulls a lot more hp than trail riding,but I have seen lots of Warriors on the dunes, they seemed to do just fine. As the other posts said, good tires make a lot of difference, as well as proper gearing, and being set up with the best filter/pipe/jetting for the area you are riding. Have fun !!
