Just got home after my first race. I finished 10th overall out of ~30 1 lap contestants, I think 6th on the 4-stroke ATVs with a time of around 25 or 30 minutes. There were some guys doing 2 laps, but it was mostly rolling sand whoops for about 4 miles of the 18 mile course. Needless to say, typing hurts very badly resulting from severe arm pump. I think I would have done better, but I didn't tighten my throttle enough when I installed the new bars, so it started rotating while I was racing. I also can say that there is no way in hell I would have finished without my Denton steering stabilizer - every ATV should have one! If you haven't tried running a Hare Scramble - DO IT! I gotta find some more ASAP. This was at Horn Rapids ORV Park in Richland, WA and sponsored by the EWDRA (http://www.nwinfo.net/~kawabike/ewdra.html).

I am pretty sure the winner was a 250R. There was several groups from Seattle (about 200 Mi away) who brought some very serious hardware. There were 3 raptors (2 stock, 1 with a pipe) and 1 DS. The rest were a bunch of 400EX's in varying levels of modification, some banshees, a few 300EX/Warriors, some Blasters, and a Scrambler. The results were a little skewed since they had to start us in 2 rows with a delay in between. They don't post bike with riders, so I don't think I will be able to tell until the videos get done.

I don't think my finish was limited by hardware... The Blaster/Warrior/300EX guys seemed to do OK too - sand wasn't too deep, not too many long straights. I got in to 5th gear once - mostly in 2-3rd the whole time. There wasn't a lot of passing room - 8' lane, bordered by sagebrush, so most people pretty much stayed in order after the start. I only made about 5 "hard" passes the whole time, only to lose them when my arms gave out. I would guess about 5 DNF's based on the abandoned plastic. I don't know how the 2-lap guys did.

cruz3,

There's a guy on the DS board claiming the win for that race. Did you know each other were there? Did either of you ever pass each other or etc..?

I won that race with a time of 25min. The guy on the 250r was behing me. He was fully modified with a-arms, axel and custom axis suspension. I did get a pretty good start, as I ended up second into the first turn. My DS is rock stock and I to got a good case of arm pump, but I like winning to much so I toughed it out.

That's cool - I wondered how the DS finished. DSracer was toward the front of the pack at the start - but the dust made it hard to see after ~200 yards. I also saw him near the front later on. Had I known times would have been so close, I would have gone in the first wave! Talk about arm pump - I couldn't sign my name today at all!

Do you know anything else about the results?

No I don't know anymore about the results, but they should be posted on the EWDRA web site sonn at, http://www.nwinfo.net/~kawabike/ewdra.html I also finished second in the open class on a banshee in the fall of 1999. What did you think of the course, it wasn't the greatest, the sand was super soft, not enough jumps and marked poorly. I missed a section that went through a gate, I was lucky that I had a big lead and was able to turn around without losing position. It was fun though and I will attend again in the fall. Also, do you know of anymore races.

I kind of liked the course, but wasn't all that fond of the mega-long whoops. Some more jumps would have been nice, but Horn Rapids has either really small ones or really big ones - nothing in between for ATVs. I think the marking was OK-having more than one warning sign would have been better. The sand probably helped you and me - I am used to it, so it didn't bug me much. I like the soft sand better than the whoops anyway. I have been searching for races in E-WA/ID/OR and can't find any sort of consolidated list. I was thinking about cranking up a quick Geocities page compiling everything I can find. It looks like there should be similar events in Spokane, but I can't find a listing. Maybe we could run at the Squisher races at Horn Rapids, but I would rather do XC or Hare Scrambles.
