Default Thumb Throttle Tightness?

Hey Y'all,

I have an old beater Yamaha Timberwolf 250 2wd that I use around my hunting property.

I was wondering how tight the thumb throttle should be? Seems that there is maybe an inch of loose throttle until it tightens up and makes the atv go.

Is this normal? If not how can I go about tightening the throttle up?

An inch is to much, should be more like 1/8" There should be a wheel to turn where the cable enters the throttle housing. Lengthen the metal rod by screwing it out, then lock it down with the wheel. Many cables also have an adjuster somewhere closer to or at the carb as well.

This problem is common in older ATVs, it is caused by the slow stretching of the throttle cable.

1. Pull the slack through, knot it and snip the excess.

2. Replace the throttle cable.

Both are easy fixes, try the 1st option before the 2nd. GL

Yup, to much play. The adjuster I was talking about should run through the rubber boot seen at the top left of the video. If you have no adjustment left, just buy a new cable. If it has stretched that much, you are running a chance it may fray and break either leaving you stranded or even causing the throttle to stick. A cable rarely runs over $15.00, cheap insurance.
