Yeah, followed the manual diagram on the rings, surely the problem has got to be in the head.

Well I got the thing running, she`s purring like a kitten now, I got hold of a spare head, put it on and she fired right up, strange that the head that was on looked fine, no leaky valves, cam looked good, oh I also changed the head gasket, mmmm, I wonder if that was the problem?

could have been the gasket. i had about the same problem on my wolf. glad you got her running.
