rebuild starter motor ?...

...Is it possible and worth it?...Think the starter motor on '94 Kodiak is bad...direct connect to battery produces nothing. Rebuild or buy new? Parts fiche wants $230. Anywhere cheaper?...Thanks

As long as the commutator is not scored (happens when the brushes are so worn that the brush holder grinds against the commutator), all you'll probably need is a set of new brushes and a bearing. I've done this on starters and alternators-pretty easy process.
Hitachi and ND make a lot of the starters for Japanese motor products. I would disassemble the starter, and take it to a automotive electrical shop. They can then order you the parts required. Set of brushes and a bearing will be a lot cheaper than a new or rebuilt starter.

I use the term "starter" to mean the starter and its internals (motor).
Rebuild the starter if you can--much cheaper than a new one, plus, you'll have the satisfaction of doing the work yourself, and saving $$.

This is getting funny...I am meaning the "starting motor". It is bolted to the outside of the "starter" itself. There is a geared shaft on the "starting motor" which engages the gear on the "starter". It performs the same way a solenoid (bendix) on a car works.
Battery>Starter Relay>Starting Motor> Starter
Battery>Starter Relay>Starting Motor> Starter

I brought my 89 Yamaha 250 Moto4 starter to a auto electric repair shop and he rebuilt the starter for $90 when a new one would of cost 3x that at my Canadian Yamaha dealer. It worked fine after they fix it.
