1999 Kodiak Rear end disassembly Help
I have a 1999 kodiak 400 all time 4*4 and the rear end stopped pulling. Heard a pop followed by a sound similar to a spline striping...
Im wanting to disassemble the rear drive but need some help on how to properly do it right the first time. I found the following on the web from a person stating how he did it on a 2003 kodiak i believe and want to see if if is the same. He apparently welded the axle to the ring gear or something to fix his problem. Anyways here is what he wrote. his how-to-it probably needs some editing but we'll see..
"you have to remove both tires and hubs. the break housing the brakk drum pads and the brake plate. there are four 12 mm bolts holding that plate on. then lightly tap it off with a hammer.
then i placeced the crown nut back on the axle. on the left side (when your standing behind the bike facing the rear end) i put the crown nut on the axle to where when i hit it with a hammer i would hit the nut and the axle so i would not mess up eather. after i got the axle out i removed the five are six 14 mm bolt and the four 14 mm bolts and removed the rear end off the bike.
i then split the rear end. i belive there a six are seven 12 mm bolts and there are two 14 mm bolts. and i put the rear ens back on the bike like it goes and bolted it all back up. then i took the right side of the rear end housing and the ring gear and i placed them on the axle as if it were on the bike and i welded the ring gear to the axle. then i reinstalled everything.
if you need anything else. send me a pm and ill give you my phone number so you can call me. because i prob confused the ******** out of you with all that"
What do you guys think. I want to try to get this thing apart asap to see what i need to get replaced.
Thanks for the help.
