Default 1999 Yamaha Bear Tracker

Hi all, My brother has been riding the 1999 yamaha bear tracker alot. I think that we neglected to change the oil and it got low. It now smokes when it gets hot and we starts using it. I think it is probably the oil rings. I want to take it apart with the help of my friend but do you need to take the whole engine out to get the head off. If so does anyone know if it is difficult o disconnect the drive shaft/transmission from the engine. Worst case i can send the top end away for $160 to get it honed but im hoping it is just the rings. Any opinions. Thank you very much
