Default New and Lost :)

Put up my intro thread, but of course left questions out of that.

So, bought my first atv yesterday. Still trying to figure out exactly what it is. The more I'm looking it up, starting to get an idea.

89 moto-4 or big bear? Looked up a few vin decoders and they've all told me about nothing other than japan, 89. The one at motouniverse? is down and not working right now.

Anyway, it needs some work, no biggie, when everything opens back up tomorrow I'll see if I can't track down info, parts, a manual and get to work. Hard to start, but idles ok, WOT is ok, but that part throttle makes it wanna die. Seems to go into reverse a whole lot easier than forward gears, not a transmission (or whatever there called in ATVs) problem, it's just a PITA to get it to go anywhere really. And when the engine shuts off I hear something spinning for a while. Supposidly it's been sitting at deer camp for 2 years. So my first step is drain/clean the fuel tank, clean out or rebuild the carb. I also have two hoses comming off the carb I have no idea where they go. Charged the battery last night.

I'll get there eventually. Just would like a manual, this is all new to me. I'm comming from wheeling/crawling full size trucks Not a stranger to working on things though.

Thanks! I went to one that said big bear 350 but it was for late 90s, and didn't decode the rest of the vin.

Put the battery back in, fired it up and drove around a bit. This auto clutch thing is strange to me. And even when I slowed down a lot and down shifted it felt odd like I was trying to downshift from too high of a speed. I dunno, but I'm satisfied now, time to think about ripping it all apart.

... well maybe after a bit more playing

That the same ATV I had for years. Its the pre 1993 Big Brea 350 Moto 4 . you know its pre 1993 when they have the shifter by the front rack and it has the Low Range.
The newer Big Bears have no Low Range sub tranny.
That was one tuff reliable ATV, my friends still rides it to this day.

A good start would be to get this manual for $35 Clymer - Yamaha YFM350 YFM350FW YFM400 YFM400FW Moto-4 Big Bear

Some sure did some monkey business with the carb.

Mine was a 1989.

Thanks for the reply and link to the manual!

Funny, when I was googling to figure out what mine was, one of the pictures I saw was you and that same picture lol.

Just came back from a ride with my neighbor, hit some trails down the road and it did great for having carb issues. Got a little better infact, but still needs a cleaning or rebuild.

Well I'm all muddy and hot and tired and my hands hurt.

Oh and what's a great website for parts? I'm browsing yamahapartshouse.com, and I plan on checking out my local atv store to see what they have as well.

Right off the bat I need a new air filter housing box & lid, air filter, and one of the plastic pipes off the air box, not the one that feeds the carb, but there's another off to the side that's destroyed. A carb kit, an ignition cylinder, and when I take the rear wheels off, probably brake shoes/pads whatever it has.

Just for starters

Are there updates, mods, alternate parts that will still work? Found a new ignition switch for under $11. But all of the airbox parts I need add up to over $130 new. Found most of it on ebay but with shipping it's still $50 and I still have to buy a lot of things. Wondering if any newer big bear assemblies will work with some modification, there's the entire assembly on ebay from a '03 for 44 bucks, it looks close but I know it's a tight fit in there.
